창조주 하나님을 찬양하라 Praise God the Creator

(창세기 Genesis 1장 1~2절)

 

[Opening 들어가는 말]

 

There were 2 Jewish friends who were heading to the synagogue for worship. One friend asked, “Do you think it’s OK to smoke while praying?” “Well, you’d better ask the rabbi.” Then, the guy who asked the question went to a rabbi, “Rabbi, would it be OK to smoke while praying?” Then the rabbi sternly answered, “No way, brother! Prayer is a holy conversation with God. You cannot smoke while praying.”

 

유대인 두 사람이 예배를 드리러 회당을 향해 가고 있었습니다. 한 친구가 물었습니다. “친구야, 너는 기도 중에 담배를 피워도 된다고 생각하니?” “글쎄, 잘 모르겠는데. 랍비께 여쭈어보는 게 어때?” 그래서 첫 번째 친구가 가서 질문했습니다. “랍비님, 기도 중에 담배를 피워도 되나요?” 그랬더니 랍비는 정색하며 대답했습니다. “형제여, 그건 절대 안 되네. 기도는 하나님과 나누는 엄숙한 대화인데 그럴 수는 없다네.”

 

After hearing the rabbi’s answer, the other friend said, “You asked a wrong question. Let me try again.” So he went to the same rabbi asking, “Rabbi, should I not pray while smoking?” With gentle smile, the rabbi answered, “Brother, we can pray anytime anywhere. You can of course pray while smoking.”

 

돌아온 친구로부터 랍비의 답을 들은 다른 친구가 말했습니다. “그건 네가 질문을 잘못했기 때문이야. 내가 가서 다시 여쭤볼게.” “선생님, 담배를 피우는 중에는 기도를 하면 안 되나요?” 그러자 랍비는 얼굴에 아주 온화한 미소를 지으며 대답했습니다. “형제여, 기도는 때와 장소가 필요 없다네. 담배를 피우는 중에도 얼마든지 기도할 수 있지.”

 

The point of the questions was the same but the viewpoints were different and they brought different results. In order for us to be wise people, we need to see the world through the eyes of God because he is the Creator of the world and no one knows better about the world than he does.

 

이처럼 같은 일이라도 어떤 관점으로 보느냐에 따라 다른 결과를 가져올 수 있습니다. 우리가 지혜로운 사람이 되기 위해서는 하나님의 관점으로 보는 법을 배워야 합니다. 온 세계를 만드신 분이 하나님이시고, 하나님보다 세상을 잘 아는 존재는 없기 때문입니다.

 

 

God Created the Universe 하나님이 천지를 창조하셨다

 

Today’s passage (only two verses) shows how the universe started. The original world was a place where nothing existed. But God changed this desolate place to be a beautiful, nice place.

 

오늘 성경은 온 세계가 어떻게 시작되었는지를 보여줍니다. 원래 이 세상에는 아무것도 없었습니다. 아무 생물도 없었습니다. 그런데 하나님께서 하늘과 땅을 만드시고 아름다운 이 세상을 우리에게 주셨습니다.

 

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (v. 1)

 

The whole Bible starts with this claim. This is not an explanation; but this is a proclamation. Why? Because it’s truth. This is to proclaim that God created all things in heavens and on the earth and therefore he is the owner of everything.

 

“태초에 하나님이 천지를 창조하시니라” (1절)

 

성경 전체는 오늘 본문의 이 선언으로 시작됩니다. 여기에 대해 자세한 설명을 하지 않습니다. 그냥 선포합니다. 사실이기 때문입니다. 하나님께서 천지를 창조하셨다는 이 선포는 모든 것의 주인이 하나님이시라는 말입니다.

 

To create means to make something new out of nothing. God did not become the owner after he occupied the land that no one owned. There was nothing, totally none in the universe. No dust, no air, no oxygen, etc.

 

창조했다는 말은 아무것도 없는 데서 뭔가를 만들어낸 것을 의미합니다. 아무도 차지하지 않고 있던 이 세상에 하나님이 오셔서 원래 자신의 것이 아닌데 언젠가부터 내가 주인이라고 하신 것이 아닙니다. 온 세상에는 아무것도 없었습니다. 먼지도, 공기도, 산소도, 전혀 없었습니다.

 

In the midst of this condition, God created all things in the universe. Therefore, everything is God’s, and he is the owner of all things. We believe in this God who created all things out of nothing. God is still creating new spirits – babies are still born. But what is more important is that God is still sustaining us with his power that created all things out of nothing.

 

이러한 조건 속에서 하나님은 모든 것을 창조하셨습니다. 그러므로 모든 것은 하나님의 것이고, 하나님이 만물의 주인이십니다. 우리는 무에서 유를 창조하신 이 하나님을 믿습니다. 하나님은 지금도 새로운 생명을 만들고 계십니다. 아기들은 계속 태어나고 있습니다. 그러나 더욱 중요한 것은, 무에서 유를 창조하신 하나님, 전능하신 하나님이 당신의 그 무한한 능력으로 우리를 돌보아주고 계시다는 사실입니다.

 

Since that kind of might God cares for us, we don’t have to worry about anything. Therefore, God wants us to not worry but trust him everyday. He wants us enjoy everything in Him who has everything. We, however, try to find answers outside God; that’s why He feels sorry for us.

 

그러한 하나님이 우리를 돌봐주시기 때문에 우리는 염려할 필요가 없습니다. 하나님은 우리가 염려하지 말고 당신을 의지하며 살기를 원하십니다. 모든 것을 갖고 계신 하나님 안에서 모든 것을 누리며 살기를 원하십니다. 그런데 자꾸 하나님을 벗어나 밖에서 답을 찾으려고 하니까 안타까워하시는 것입니다.

 

Are you afraid of anything right now? Something related to school, job, career, people, future, health, etc.? Lift up your eyes and see this Creator God who can create anything out of nothing and gives each of us a new life. Amazingly enough, that kind of great God is our Father and as our Father He wants to take care of us.

 

지금 무엇을 먹을까, 무엇을 마실까, 무엇을 입을까 하는 문제로 염려하고 있습니까? 사업, 직장, 진로, 학업, 장래, 재정, 건강, 인간관계 등의 문제로 걱정이 됩니까? 무에서 유를 창조하신 하나님, 우리에게 새로운 생명을 주시는 하나님을 바라보십시오. 놀랍게도 그런 엄청나신 분이 우리의 아버지가 되십니다. 그리고 우리의 아버지로서 우리를 돌보아주기를 원하십니다.

 

God, who has nothing impossibie, gives us strength to overcome any situation. He is our Creator. He is the Lord whose power is limitless. Those who live by trusting in this God can live in peace. Trusting in God does not necessarily mean success. It does not mean making a lot of money. However, those who trust in God receive peace even in the midst of storms and crises. They can live without worry in storms. Those who truly believe in the Creator God can live without worry and enjoy peace in the midst of difficulties.

 

불가능이 없으신 하나님은 우리에게 힘을 주셔서 어떤 상황이든지 이겨내게 하십니다. 그분은 우리의 창조주이십니다. 그분은 능력이 한이 없으신 주님이십니다. 이 하나님을 신뢰하며 살아가는 사람은 평안을 누리며 살 수 있습니다. 물론 하나님을 신뢰한다고 무조건 성공하는 것은 아닙니다. 엄청난 돈을 버는 것도 아닙니다. 하지만 하나님을 신뢰하는 사람이 받는 복은, 폭풍 속에서도 고요함을 누리고 위기 속에서도 평화를 누리는 것입니다. 염려하지 않는 삶을 사는 것입니다. 창조주 하나님을 정말로 믿는 사람은 폭풍 속에서도 염려하지 않고 삶의 어려움 가운데에도 기쁨을 누리며 살 수 있습니다.

 

“Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” (v. 2)

 

This shows how barren the world was originally. Dallas and Houston, two biggest cities of Texas, were built on the desert. Plans were made and executed to build cities on top of the desert where there was nothing. Now, a huge number of people live in those cities. Even Dallas is currently one of the hottest places in the United States if not the hottest. However, those areas were originally complete deserts. These are cities built for oil out of necessity.

 

“땅이 혼돈하고 공허하며 흑암이 깊음 위에 있고 하나님의 영은 수면 위에 운행하시니라” (2절)

 

이것을 보면 원래 이 세계가 얼마나 척박한 곳이었는지를 볼 수 있습니다. 텍사스주의 대표적 도시인 댈러스(Dallas)와 휴스턴(Houston)은 사막 위에 지어졌습니다. 아무것도 없는 사막 위에 도시를 만들기 위한 계획이 세워지고 실행되어 지어졌습니다. 지금은 엄청나게 많은 사람들이 그 도시들에 살고 있습니다. 특히 댈러스 같은 곳은 현재 미국 최고의 핫플레이스로 사람들이 가장 살고 싶어 하는 곳입니다. 그러나 원래 그 지역은 완전히 사막이었던 곳입니다. 필요에 의해서 기름 때문에 세워진 도시들입니다.

 

The Bible tells us that originally this earth was very barren and empty. The earth being ‘formless’ means that there was no form on the earth. Now there is dirt, rocks, mountains, and water. But at that time, everything was mixed together without any clear distinction.

 

원래 이 지구도 아주 척박하고 아무것도 없는 그런 곳이었다고 성경은 말해줍니다. 땅이 ‘혼돈하다’라는 것은 땅에 어떤 형체도 없었다는 뜻입니다. 지금은 흙도 있고 바위도 있고 산도 있고 물도 있습니다. 그러나 이때는 아직 명확한 구분이 없이 모든 것이 뒤섞여 있는 상태였습니다.

 

And ‘emptiness’ means that it was empty and there was no living being. The phrase ‘darkness was upon the face of the deep’ is very difficult to interpret. ‘Darkness’ means literally being dark, but it is difficult to know what ‘deep’ means. When we see that ‘the Spirit of God moves upon the face of the waters,’ we can guess that ‘deep’ probably means the endless surface of the water. This means that the earth was in a very deep darkness, an unknown world, and a world so mysterious that no one could approach it.

 

그리고 ‘공허하다’라는 것은 비어 있고, 살아 움직이는 존재가 하나도 없는 상태입니다. ‘흑암이 깊음 위에 있다’라는 말은 해석이 아주 어려운데, ‘흑암’은 어두움이지만 ‘깊음’이 무엇을 의미하는지 알기가 어렵습니다. ‘하나님의 영은 수면 위에 운행’하신다는 것을 보며 학자들은 ‘깊음’이라는 것이 끝없는 물 위를 의미하는 것이 아닌가 생각합니다. 이것은 지구가 아주 깊은 어두움에 빠져 있고, 미지의 세계이며, 그 누구도 접근할 수 없을 정도로 신비에 싸인 세계였다는 것입니다.

 

There is a reason why the Bible depicts the original Earth in such a cold and bleak way. It is to tell us that this earth we live on is not an eternal place. This is not where we will live forever. It is not our true home.

 

성경이 최초의 지구를 이토록 썰렁하고 살벌한 모습으로 그리고 있는 이유가 있습니다. 우리가 살고 있는 이 땅이 영원한 곳이 아니라는 것을 알려주는 것입니다. 이곳은 우리가 영원히 거할 곳이 아니며, 우리의 진짜 본향이 아닙니다.

 

I still remember what a friend of mine in my youth days said. He told me, “I don’t want to go to heaven. It’s too much fun here.” That was naive. This world is not a fun place at all. It’s a miserable place. When God’s purpose is fulfilled, this world will return to its original desolate state. Because that’s how the world was meant to be.

 

중학생 시절 제 친구가 한 말이 아직도 기억납니다. “나는 천국에 가기가 싫어. 여기가 너무 재미있거든. 천국은 여기처럼 재미가 없을 것 같아.” 그건 잘 모르고 순진해서 한 말입니다. 이 세상은 결코 재미있는 곳이 아닙니다. 괴로운 곳입니다. 하나님의 목적이 다하는 날이 오면 이 세상은 다시 황량한 원래의 상태로 돌아갈 것입니다. 왜냐하면 그것이 세상의 원래 모습이기 때문입니다.

 

So why did God make this originally desolate place so beautiful? There is only one purpose. To create God’s people. To create people of blessings who willingly obey God’s will. God showed us the originally desolate and lonely earth in order to teach us what we should value most and focus our lives on.

 

그렇다면 원래 그토록 황량했던 곳을 이렇게 아름답게 만드신 이유가 무엇입니까? 그 목적은 하나밖에 없습니다. 하나님의 백성을 만드시기 위해서입니다. 자발적으로 하나님의 뜻에 순종하는 복된 백성을 만드시기 위해서입니다. 하나님은 우리에게 무엇을 더 중요하게 생각해야 하며 어디에 초점을 두고 살아야 할지 보여주시려고 최초의 황량하고 쓸쓸한 지구의 모습을 알려주셨습니다.

 

Everything in this world is like a temporary training center for the spiritual maturity of God's people. It is a training center built as a temporary structure. It is not a permanent building. Once the purpose of training is achieved, it will be torn down and thrown into a barren field. Therefore, Christians do not cling to the things given by this world.

 

이 세상의 모든 것은 하나님 백성의 영적 성숙을 위한 임시 훈련소와 같습니다. 가건물로 지은 훈련소입니다. 영구적 건물이 아닙니다. 훈련의 목적만 달성되면 다시 다 헐어버리고 황량한 들판으로 내던져버릴 것입니다. 그래서 그리스도인들은 이 세상이 주는 것들에 연연하지 않습니다.

 

What matters is not our status in this world, but how beautiful and valuable our life is. Those who are satisfied with having a lot without such a life will soon realize how foolish their satisfaction is. This earth is not a place where we will dwell forever, but a place where we will stop someday. That is why God warns and informs us from the beginning of the Bible that those who place their hopes on this earth will eventually become barren, just like the original earth. And He tells us to trust only in God and live with His value.

 

중요한 것은 이 세상에서의 지위가 아니라, 얼마나 아름답고 얼마나 가치 있는 삶을 사느냐입니다. 그러한 삶이 없이 그저 많은 것을 가졌다고 좋아하는 사람은 그 만족이 얼마나 어리석은 것인지를 알게 될 때가 곧 올 것입니다. 이 땅은 우리가 영원히 거할 곳이 아니라 언젠가는 멈출 곳입니다. 그래서 하나님은 성경의 첫 부분부터 이 땅에 소망을 두는 자는 결국 원래 이 땅의 모습대로 황량하게 될 수밖에 없다는 것을 경고하시고 알려주시는 것입니다. 그리고 하나님만 신뢰하며 그분의 가치를 갖고 살 것을 말씀하십니다.

Who is God? He is the Creator who created something from nothing. If He created all things in the universe with His words, would His power have any limit? But surprisingly, such a great God is our Father and protect and cares for our lives. This is the grace of God.

 

하나님은 어떤 분이십니까? 무에서 유를 창조하신 창조주이십니다. 온 우주 만물을 말씀으로 창조하신 분이라면 능력에 한이 있겠습니까? 그런데 놀랍게도 그런 분이 우리 아버지가 되시고 우리 삶을 책임져주신다는 것입니다. 이게 바로 은혜입니다.

 

The Bible clearly declares from the beginning that God is almighty God who raises the dead, performs miracles, and is capable of caring for our lives. Therefore, no matter what difficult things are happening in our lives right now, I bless all of us in the name of the Lord to entrust everything to God, who created all things in the universe and takes care of my life with His power so that we can become victorious through faith in our daily living.

 

하나님은 죽은 자를 살리기도 하시며 어떤 기적도 일으키시며 능히 내 삶을 책임질 수 있는 분이시라는 것을 성경은 처음부터 분명하게 선포하고 있습니다. 그러므로 어떤 어려운 일이 지금 내 삶에 있다 하더라도, 온 우주 만물을 창조하시고 그 능력으로 내 삶을 돌봐주시는 하나님께 모든 것을 맡기며 믿음으로 승리하는 우리 모두가 되기를 주님의 이름으로 축복합니다.
