피츠버그신학대학원(Pittsburgh Theological Seminary)에서 목회학석사(MDiv)를 취득했고,

Seton Hill University에서 MBA를 취득했으며, 그곳에서 MBA 프로그램의 겸임 교수로도 재직했습니다.

Jesus Denounces Scribes and Pharisees

서기관들과 바리새인들을 꾸짖으신 예수

(Matthew 마태복음 23:1-12)

 

 

Do you know the name of the person who runs the vacuum or mops the floors here?  A man was once told that the most important names of the company employees were the names of those who served the company: the janitors, the people in the mailroom, the secretaries.  Those were the people who were the true heroes, who really knew what was happening.  They are often the unsung heroes though.  Most people don’t give them a glance or know their names.

How does it feel to be a person who others don’t see?

 

여기서 진공청소기를 돌리거나 바닥을 청소하는 사람의 이름을 아시나요? 어떤 사람이 자기 회사 직원 중 가장 중요한 사람들은 청소 담당자, 우편실 직원, 비서와 같이 회사에서 봉사하는 사람들이라는 말을 들었습니다. 그들은 무슨 일이 일어나고 있는지를 잘 아는 진정한 영웅들이었습니다. 하지만 그들은 종종 잘 알려지지 않은 영웅들입니다. 대부분의 사람들은 그들을 한 번도 쳐다보지 않거나 그들의 이름을 알지 못합니다. 남들이 쳐다보지도 않는 사람이 된다는 것은 어떤 기분이겠습니까?

 

Culturally, I don’t know what it is like to be of Korean heritage living in the United States…but you do.  I do know that often people of non-Caucasian nationalities are overlooked, bypassed, ignored.  And that is terrible.  We waste the talents of people we overlook.  We miss out on the gifts that God has blessed the people with if we ignore them.

 

문화적으로 볼 때 한국 혈통을 가진 사람으로서 미국에서 산다는 것이 어떤 것인지 저는 잘 모르지만, 여러분은 잘 아십니다. 하지만 백인이 아닌 인종 사람들이 자주 간과되고 무시된다는 것을 저는 잘 알고 있습니다. 그것은 끔찍한 일입니다. 그렇게 사람들을 간과하면 그들의 재능을 낭비하는 게 됩니다. 우리가 그들을 무시한다면 하나님께서 그들에게 복으로 주신 은사를 놓치게 됩니다.

 

I wonder what it was like in the time of Jesus for this episode to be related in our Bibles.  We can infer that the religious leaders, the scribes and Pharisees, were telling people how to live, but not living it themselves.  They were giving people a list of things to do in order to find God’s favor, but they were not willing to do all those things in their own lives.  One thing they were good at – making a show of the few things they did.  They wore showy prayer shawls, they sat in places of honor everywhere they went, and they expected to be treated with respect.  Talk about the complete opposite of the persons who serve the company in the quiet, peacefulness of obscurity.

 

오늘 본문의 내용이 예수님 당시에는 어땠는지 궁금합니다. 당시 종교지도자인 서기관들과 바리새인들은 사람들에게 어떻게 살아야 하는가에 대해서는 말했지만, 자기들은 그렇게 살지 않았다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 그들은 사람들에게 하나님의 사랑을 받기 위해서 해야 할 일들의 목록을 주었지만, 정작 자기들은 삶 속에서 그런 일들을 하려고 들지 않았습니다. 그들이 한 가지 잘했던 일은 자기들이 행한 몇 가지 일들을 보여주는 것이었습니다. 그들은 화려한 기도용 어깨걸이를 두르고, 가는 곳마다 상석에 앉으며, 자기들이 존경받을 것을 기대했습니다. 조용하고 애매한 평온함 가운데 회사에서 봉사하는 사람들과는 정반대였습니다.

 

Jesus wanted the disciples to learn a valuable lesson: don’t be like the religious elite of the day.  Instead, Jesus wanted them to learn to be servant leaders.  Jesus wanted them to lead by encouraging others, teaching by showing their own changed lives, and not seeking out worldly praise.  I’m sure this disappointed the disciples.  This kind of talk was not what they expected from the Messiah.  They wanted a leader who would be out front, taking over from the Romans, being a showman.

 

예수님은 제자들이 이때 귀중한 교훈을 배우기를 원하셨습니다. 당시의 종교 엘리트처럼 되지 말라는 것입니다. 대신 예수님은 그들이 섬기는 지도자가 되는 법을 배우기를 원하셨습니다. 예수님은 그들이 다른 사람들을 격려하고, 자신의 변화된 삶을 보여줌으로써 가르치고, 세상의 칭찬을 구하지 않는 지도자가 되기를 원하셨습니다. 예수님의 이런 가르침은 제자들을 실망시켰을 것이 분명합니다. 이런 종류의 말은 그들이 메시아에게서 기대했던 것이 아니었습니다. 그들은 가장 앞에 서서 로마인들을 쫓아내는 쇼맨이 될 지도자를 원했습니다.

 

Don’t we still want that?  Don’t we want to say to others – see…that’s my church…we know the way to heaven and we know how to live.  We’re the way to go!  But that’s not what Jesus wants – not then and not now.  

 

우리는 아직도 그것을 원하지 않습니까? 우리는 다른 사람들에게 이렇게 말하고 싶지 않습니까? ‘보세요...저것이 내 교회입니다...우리는 천국에 가는 길을 알고, 어떻게 살아야 하는지도 압니다. 우리가 바로 가야 할 길입니다!’ 그러나 그것은 예수님이 원하시는 것이 아닙니다. 그때나 지금이나 마찬가지입니다. 

 

The reason we don’t often pay attention to those in the building that serve us?  They do their jobs and don’t complain.  They change our lives because the work that is needed is done, and so we never miss a beat.  What would happen if those servers were not doing their jobs?  We might slip on a wet floor, we might not get the mail we were expecting, we might not have toilet paper in the restroom!  Now that’s terrible!

 

우리가 건물 안에서 우리를 섬기는 사람들에게 별로 신경을 쓰지 않는 이유는 무엇입니까? 그들은 자기 일을 하면서도 불평하지 않습니다. 우리에게 필요한 일들이 그들을 통해 잘 이루어졌기 때문에 그들이 우리의 삶을 변화시키고, 그에 따라 우리가 놓치는 일 없이 모든 일을 감당할 수 있는 것입니다. 그렇게 섬기는 사람들이 자기 책임을 다하지 않는다면 어떻게 되겠습니까? 젖은 바닥에서 미끄러질 수도 있고, 기대했던 우편물을 받지 못할 수도 있고, 화장실에 화장지가 없을 수도 있습니다! 그건 정말 끔찍한 일입니다!

 

So what does it mean if we aren’t doing our jobs as servant leaders for Jesus?  First, we wouldn’t be transformed from a selfish, greedy person into a loving, caring, and compassionate person.  People would look at us and see that we only had ourselves in mind.  Next, we wouldn’t be humble and obedient – we would still want the praise and adoration of those around us.  And we would not be focused on bringing God the glory…we would want all the glory for ourselves.

 

그렇다면 우리가 예수님을 위한 섬기는 지도자로서 해야 할 일을 하지 않는다는 것은 무엇을 의미합니까? 

첫째, 우리는 이기적이고 탐욕스러운 사람에서 사랑하고 돌보고 자비로운 사람으로 변화되지 않을 것입니다. 사람들은 우리를 보면서 자기만 생각하는 사람인 것을 발견할 것입니다.

다음으로, 우리는 겸손하거나 순종적이지 않고, 여전히 주변 사람들의 칭찬과 존경을 바라며 살아갈 것입니다. 그러면서 하나님께 영광을 돌리는 데 초점을 맞추지 않고 모든 영광을 자기가 받으려고 할 것입니다.

 

The best way we can be servant leaders for Jesus is to live the life that Jesus defined for us.  Love God and love neighbors.  That means we aren’t focused on what we get out of life.  Instead, we are focused on what we can do to show how much we love God, and in doing that, we honor God by loving and caring for our neighbors.  We respond to the love of God that we already received, and we show others humbly that God loves them too.

 

예수님을 위해 섬기는 리더가 될 수 있는 가장 좋은 방법은 예수님께서 우리를 위해 정해주신 삶을 사는 것입니다.  ‘하나님을 사랑하라. 그리고 이웃을 사랑하라.’ 이는 인생에서 자기가 얻을 것에 집중하지 않는다는 것을 의미합니다. 대신 우리는 하나님을 얼마나 사랑하는지를 보여줄 수 있는지에 초점을 맞추고, 그렇게 하는 가운데 이웃을 사랑하고 돌보는 일을 통해 하나님께 영광을 돌리게 됩니다. 우리는 이미 받은 하나님의 사랑에 응답하면서, 다른 사람들에게 하나님이 그들도 사랑하신다는 사실을 겸손히 보여 줍니다.

 

I was just talking with another pastor from our presbytery.  The pastor mentioned that the people in the congregation expect the pastor to do all the work.  That’s all the teaching, preaching, pastoral care, visiting, fundraising, secretarial work, janitorial work, and that the pastor should have food in the refrigerator in case someone stopped by and hadn’t eaten dinner yet.  Talk about a servant…but not a leader…the pastor isn’t encouraging others to participate in a way that is engaging them to serve.  The congregation is an observer, not a participant.

 

나는 얼마 전 우리 노회의 다른 목사님과 이야기를 나눌 기회가 있었습니다. 그 목사님은 자기 교인들이 목사가 모든 일을 다 할 것을 기대한다고 말했습니다. 가르치는 일, 설교하는 일, 돌보는 일, 방문하는 일, 모금하는 일, 사무 일, 청소하는 일, 그리고 아직 저녁을 먹지 않은 사람이 방문하는 경우를 대비해서 목사가 냉장고에 음식을 준비하고 있어야 한다는 것입니다. 리더가 아니라 종에 대해 이야기한 그 목사님은, 교인들이 봉사에 참여하도록 그들을 인도하지 못하고 있습니다. 그 회중은 참여자가 아니라 구경꾼에 머물고 있습니다.

 

Being an observer is not allowing people to see us transformed.  Being a participant gives God plenty of opportunity to grow us into the Jesus-followers that God wants us to be.  When our neighbors see us, are they seeing us change to be more like Jesus?  Or are they seeing people that look like everyone else in our culture – angry, self-centered, opinionated?

 

구경꾼(관찰자)이 되면 사람들이 우리의 변화를 볼 수 없게 만듭니다. 반면에 사역에 동참하는 사람이 되면 하나님이 원하시는 예수님의 제자로 우리를 성장시킬 수 있는 많은 기회를 하나님께 드리는 것이 됩니다. 사람들은 우리가 예수님을 더 닮아가며 변화되는 모습을 보고 있습니까? 아니면 그들은 우리에게서 세상의 다른 사람들처럼 똑같이 화를 내고, 자기중심적이고, 독선적인 사람들을 보고 있습니까?

 

 

Jesus told the disciples that the greatest among you would be your servant.  That did not mean that the greatest would be a doormat, laying down and being trampled upon.  It does mean that Jesus was looking for his followers to be humble, willing to put aside our own desires in order to help out others.  Being a servant isn’t a comfortable place to be when our culture tell us to be the best, to take what we want, to be all we can be.

 

예수님은 제자들에게 너희 중에 가장 큰 자는 너희 종이 될 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그렇다고 해서 가장 위대한 사람이 그저 발로 짓밟히는 발판처럼 될 것이라는 뜻은 아닙니다. 그것은 예수님께서 제자를 찾으실 때, 겸손하며 다른 사람들을 돕기 위해 자기 욕망을 기꺼이 내려놓을 줄 아는 사람들을 원하신다는 것을 의미합니다. 우리 문화가 우리에게 최고가 되라고 하고, 원하는 것을 취하라고 하고, 될 수 있는 최고가 되라고 말하는 상황 속에서, 종이 된다는 것은 결코 편안한 일이 아닙니다.

 

Last I checked, our goal wasn’t to live up to the expectations of our culture.  We are to live up to the expectations of our Creator.  We live every day because of the gift of breath from our loving God.  We need to honor our God with our very lives and all we do within it.  Instead of seeking worldly praise, we need to bring God our praise for our existence and our blessings.

 

마지막으로 확인해보니, 우리의 목표는 우리 문화의 기대를 만족시키는 것이 아니었습니다. 우리는 우리를 만드신 창조주의 기대에 부응하는 삶을 살아야 합니다. 우리는 매일 사랑의 하나님께서 주시는 호흡의 선물 때문에 살아가고 있습니다. 우리는 자신의 삶과 삶 속에서 행하는 모든 일들로 우리 하나님께 영광을 돌려야 합니다. 세상적인 칭찬을 추구하는 대신, 우리의 존재 자체와 받은 복들로 인하여 하나님께 찬양을 돌리는 것이 마땅합니다.

 

I encourage you to think about those who serve you, in restaurants, at work, at church.  How can you show them that you are operating your life from a position of servant also?  A broad smile, a sufficient tip, a kind hello, a living wage… and participating in serving others, in the name of our generous and loving God.  Amen

 

식당에서, 일터에서, 교회에서 여러분을 섬기는 사람들에 대해 생각해 보실 것을 권면합니다. 여러분 자신도 종의 위치에서 살아가고 있다는 것을 그들에게 어떻게 보여줄 수 있겠습니까? 활짝 웃는 얼굴, 충분한 팁, 친절한 인사… 또한 넉넉하시고 사랑이 풍성하신 하나님의 이름으로 다른 사람들을 섬기는 일에 참여하시기를 바랍니다. 아멘
