“마리아의 노래 Mary’s Song”

(누가복음 Luke 1:46~55)

 

 

[들어가는 말]

 

The development of the 21st century technology is really amazing. I think most of us have HDTV at home. There are 4K TVs nowadays. Most of us use smart phones, and mobile technology is amazing. But no matter how great technology may be, it won’t be able to do anything as long as there is no electricity. Even if you have a portable battery charger, it should be connected to the power source to get recharged so that it can recharge our phones and tablets.

 

이 21세기 과학 기술의 발전은 정말 놀랍습니다. 많은 분들이 HD TV를 갖고 계시고, 요즘은 4K TV도 나왔습니다. 또 스마트폰을 많이 쓰십니다. 그러나 과학 기술이 아무리 발전한다고 해도, 전기가 없다면 그 모든 훌륭한 것들이 무용지물이 되고 맙니다. 요즘 들고 다니며 차지하는 것도 있지만, 그것도 전기 충전을 해주어야 다른 것을 충전해줄 수 있습니다.

 

In September 1989, a powerful hurricane named Hugo suddenly landed in Charleston, SC and cruelly damaged many houses, buildings and churches. It was one of the strongest hurricanes in the U. S. history. It was similar to Hurricane Katrina to New Orleans.

 

At that time, I was a student of the University of South Carolina. I still have a fresh memory of that day how horrifying the hurricane really was. So many people including myself had to live without electricity for many days. Of course it was good to relax after classes were cancelled but I had almost nothing to do without power. There was no TV, no radio, no video, no computer, no cooking, no microwave, no wireless phones... just nothing.

 

1989년에 허리케인 휴고(Hugo)가 사우스캐롤라이나 주에 왔습니다. 원래 바다로 나간다고 했는데 갑자기 찰스턴(Charleston)으로 상륙하여 엄청난 피해를 입혔습니다. 저도 당시 그곳 대학생이었는데, 허리케인으로 인해 그 일대 전기가 다 끊겼습니다. 수업이 다 취소되어 놀게 된 것은 아주 좋았는데, 막상 전기가 끊기니 할 수 있는 것이 별로 없었습니다. TV, 컴퓨터, 비디오, 마이크로웨이브, 음식 만들기, 무선전화 등 아무것도 할 수 없었습니다.

 

Without power, there are not too many things that we can do today. In the passage we have just read, Mary praises God for his mighty power. That's the power we need. We don't need weak power like batteries. We need the ultimate source of the true power, that is God Almighty.

 

파워가 없으면 할 수 있는 것이 별로 많지 않습니다. 오늘 본문에 보면 마리아는 하나님을 찬양하는데, 특히 그분의 능력(파워)을 찬양합니다. 우리에게는 바로 그 주님의 파워가 필요합니다. 우리에게 필요한 참 능력, 진짜 파워의 근원은 바로 전능하신 하나님이십니다.

 

 

1.   믿는 자에게 주님이 주시는 복을 보여주는 계절 (46-48절)

 

Mary was just notified by an angel that she would be the mother of Christ. After that, Mary praises God with all her soul and spirit (46-47). Why? It’s because the Lord has been mindful of her humble state; the Mighty God has done great things for her (49). That means, she thought she was a lowly person. But Angel Gabriel came to her with a great message from God saying, "You are highly favored! The Lord is with you. You have found favor with God" (28, 30). Mary accepted the amazing promise and praised God who had done great things for her.

 

오늘 본문에 보면, 마리아는 감사하고 감격하며 주님을 찬양하고 있습니다. 온 마음과 영을 다해 주님을 높인다고 합니다(46-47). 왜 그렇습니까? 주님께서 자기의 비천함을 돌아보셨기 때문입니다(48). 그러니까 스스로 자신을 보며 비천하다고 생각했는데, 놀랍게도 천사는 자기를 가리켜 “은혜를 받은 자”라고 합니다. 그리고 주님께서 함께 하신다고 말합니다(28, 30). 마리아는 천사를 통해 주어진 하나님의 약속을 믿고 받아들입니다. 그리고 그토록 “큰일”을 행하신 주님을 찬양합니다.

 

Today is Christmas, which is not just a day but a season. Christmas is a season that shows the fact that blessed are no one else but those who believe. Blessed are no one else but those who believe. Mary was just an ordinary girl. The Bible does not say that she was from a noble family or had tremendous beauty or great wealth or abilities. But there was one special aspect Mary had that no one else had. It was her faith in God.

 

Would you believe this if you were notified that you would be the mother of Christ? Mary truly believed in the Lord. That’s why Elizabeth her relative proclaimed, “Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!” (45) An ordinary teenaged girl named Mary, who was living in such a lowly and despised place as Nazareth in a remote place called Galilee, became a greatly blessed person through her faith.

 

이 성탄절은 하루가 아니라 절기인데, 믿는 자에게 복이 임한다는 사실을 보여주는 절기입니다. 마리아는 많은 여인들 중 특별할 것이 없었던 평범한 어린 소녀에 불과했습니다. 무슨 뛰어난 미모를 가졌다거나, 귀한 집안 출신이었다거나, 천재적인 재능을 지녔다거나, 부자였다는 말이 전혀 없습니다. 그러나 마리아에게는 남들에게 없는 특별한 것이 하나 있었습니다. 그것은 바로 ‘믿음’입니다.

 

그래서 마리아의 친척인 엘리사벳은 마리아를 향해 이렇게 외쳤습니다. “주께서 하신 말씀이 반드시 이루어지리라고 믿은 그 여자에게 복이 있도다”(45). 세계와 이스라엘의 변방 갈릴리 땅, 그 중에서도 멸시와 천대를 받던 나사렛 동네에 살던 한 평범한 처녀(십대 소녀) 마리아는, 자신의 믿음으로 인하여 참으로 복을 받은 사람이 되었습니다.

 

Every single person is equal before God in terms of faith. In the world, there are so many classes that classify and divide people. But in terms of faith, everybody is equal before God. God’s blessing is not based upon our talents, knowledge, possessions or backgrounds but upon our faith in Him. When the Mighty One blesses us, everything else is just trivial. No matter how many things we have, they are just trivial.

 

Therefore, I want all of us to believe that such a blessing will come to those who believe! Not those who possess great wealth or have high social status. No. Those who believe! Christmas is the season when the believers celebrate this amazing fact!

 

믿음이라는 관점에서 볼 때 모든 사람은 다 하나님 앞에서 평등합니다. 이 세상은 자꾸 사람들을 계층으로 나눕니다. 많이 가졌느냐, 못 가졌느냐? 많이 배웠느냐, 못 배웠느냐? 그런데 하나님 앞에서는 모두가 평등합니다. 믿음이라는 관점으로 보십니다. 하나님은 우리의 재능이나 지식이나 돈이나 배경을 보고 복을 주시는 것이 아니라, 믿음을 보고 복을 주십니다. 왜냐하면 믿음이 있어야 하나님이 복을 주실 때 누릴 수 있기 때문입니다. 믿음이 없으면 아무리 복을 주셔도 누릴 능력이 없습니다.

 

그리고 그 위대하신 분이 복을 주실 때 나머지 모든 것은 다 작은 것이 됩니다. 이 땅에서 아무리 억만금을 가졌어도 믿음에 비하면 정말 작은 일입니다. 엄청난 돈을 받은 종들에게 하나님은 ‘적은 것에 충성했다’고 하셨습니다. 누구든지 믿는 자에게는 이러한 놀라운 복이 임합니다. 이 세상에서 많이 배운 자, 많이 가진 자, 높은 자리에 올라간 자가 아니라, 믿는 자에게 복이 임한다는 사실을 믿으시기 바랍니다. 성탄절은 주님을 믿는 자들이 바로 이 사실을 축하하는 절기입니다.

 

 

2.  위대하신 하나님께서 비천한 자들을 돌아보시는 계절 (49-50절)

 

We also celebrate Christmas because God has cared for such a lowly girl like Mary and done great things through her. Our faith is not something we just appreciate what God has done in other peoples’ lives. Faith is to realize the God Almighty, who is too great for us to approach, has taken care of a lowly person like me and to live with thanksgiving to His grace. That’s the true meaning of Christmas. God blesses those who fear him and worship him with humble hearts just like Mary says in v. 50. He extends his mercy to those people, and at Christmas we reaffirm that fact.

 

성탄절의 또 다른 기쁨은, 천지의 창조주이신 하나님이 비천한 소녀 종을 돌아보시고 그녀를 통해 큰일을 행하셨다는 데 있습니다. 우리의 믿음은 남들에게 일어난 위대한 구원 사건을 감상하는 것에 머무르지 않습니다. 믿음이란 것은, 너무나 위대하셔서 우리가 감히 가까이 갈 수도 없는 그런 하나님께서 이 비천한 나를 돌아보셨다는 것을 깨닫는 겁니다. 그리고 내게 주신 그 은혜에 감사하며 사는 것입니다.

 

생각해보십시오. 이 세상에서 나를 알아주는 사람들이 몇이나 있습니까? 그런데 온 우주를 만드신 하나님께서 나를 알아주신다니, 이 얼마나 놀라운 것입니까? 바로 그 은혜에 감사하며 사는 것이 성탄절의 진정한 의미입니다. 이것을 마리아를 통해 알려주셨습니다. 성탄절은 그렇게 주님을 두려워(경외)하며 나아가는 자에게 주님께서 긍휼을 베풀어주시는 것을 확인하는 계절입니다(50).

 

 

3.  온 우주의 기쁨이 되는 계절 (51-55절)

 

Christmas gives joy not only to each individual but also to all humanity and the entire universe. The birth of Jesus Christ also means justice and equality in this world. Look at the world. Those who have power and wealth oppress other people and keep trying to gain more and more and manipulate others. But any human power and wealth and pride will be broken down before the Lord.

 

성탄은 개인의 기쁨뿐 아니라 온 인류와 온 우주의 기쁨입니다. 예수 그리스도의 탄생은 곧 이 땅에서의 정의와 평등을 이루는 의미도 있습니다. 이 세상을 보십시오. 힘과 돈을 가진 자들이 가지지 못한 자들을 억누르고 위에서 군림하며 계속해서 자기만 잘 먹고 잘 살기 위해 남을 찾취하는 세상입니다. 그러나 주님 앞에서는 인간의 어떠한 권력과 부와 교만함도 다 허무하게 무너지게 될 것입니다. 이것은 선포하는 것이 성탄절입니다.

 

Those who can sing like Mary are not the arrogant but the humble. Not those who are proud and rich but those who are humble and hungry can sing Mary’s Song.

 

마리아와 같이 노래할 수 있는 사람은 높은 사람이 아니라 낮은 사람입니다. 교만한 자가 아니라 겸손한 사람(51), 권력을 가진 사람이 아니라 비천한 사람(52), 돈 많은 사람이 아니라 굶주린 사람이 이런 찬양의 노래를 부를 수가 있습니다.

 

Then, what are we boasting? Are we bragging about our talents, social status or material wealth and pursuing them? Such people looking after those cannot truly sing this Mary’s Song. Only those who recognize how lowly they are before God and humbly seek His mercy can sing this Mary’s Song.

 

그렇다면 우리는 지금 무엇을 자랑하고 있습니까? 나 자신의 재능, 사회적 지위, 물질적 풍요로움을 자랑합니까? 그런 것을 추구하며 살아갑니까? 그러한 사람은 이 마리아의 노래를 부를 수가 없습니다. 하나님 앞에서 비천한 자신의 모습을 깨닫고 그분 앞에서 겸손히 주님의 자비를 구하는 사람만이 이 마리아의 노래(찬미)를 부를 수 있습니다.

 

I hope that we will be like Mary, whom God has blessed, so that we can sing Mary’s Song. I pray that each and every one of us will be the person whom God seeks and grants His mercy and grace so that we can always praise and worship the Lord in our lives every single day.

 

이 성탄절에 바로 우리가 이러한 마리아의 노래를 부르는 사람들이 될 수 있기를 바랍니다. 주님이 찾으시고 은혜를 베푸시는 바로 그러한 사람들이 되어서, 언제나 그 주님을 찬양하고 경배하는 우리 모두의 삶이 매일매일 되기를 간절히 바랍니다.
